Since Berthine works at Tree of Life Foundation , we thought it would be a good idea to publish the book on their behalf. The book can be used as teaching material for the training courses they offer and it is also a suitable means to generate additional income for the work that this foundation does so passionately.

The book sales benefit the foundation, so that the work they do can continue and grow!

For this purpose we've chosen a new look for the cover. And what could be better fit, than using a photo on the cover of one of Tree of Life's projects in Malawi ? That's also the project Berthine writes about in chapter 6 of her book. How wonderful!

Our vegatable garden

Almost nine years ago, Berthine and I bought a small farm with 2,000 square meters of land around it. We try to grow our food there in an environmentally friendly way. We want to live as much as possible from the produce of our own land. We only go to the supermarket for grains, dairy, chips and cookies.

We were very inspired by a documentary in which an American searches for a gardening method that fits the original design of creation: so-called back-to-Eden gardening . This is a regenerative organic method that doesn't use tillage. Instead, you cover the soil with organic matter like compost and wood chips. It saves water and stimulates soil life. As a result, we have a lot of worms, hyphae, and mushrooms in the garden, which provide food for the plants and loosen the soil.

Our idea is that God created a good ecosystem in the beginning, and that we should try to maintain that. Several farmers have received the same revelation from God about agriculture: to stop plowing and cover the soil. Nature does the same thing in the fall. Nature is constantly teaching us how to do things right.

In our society, we've lost faith in God, and in His design, and think we have to "improve" nature with genetic engineering. But the design is already perfect; we just need to restore it to its original state.

New mission for Berthine

Half a year after launching her book ‘I Will Heal Their Land’, the Tree of Life Foundation asked Berthine to join their team. She was more than happy to do so.

Berthine: “Tree of Life is one of the two NGO’s that bought Deon’s farm in Malawi, to continue training small scale farmers in regenerative farming and agroforestry. Deon had called it ‘the Eden Africa project’. To be asked to help take care of the garden of Eden in Africa, was the greatest honour I could think of. I had to say ‘yes’.”

Deon went back to South Africa and left this project in the caring hands of a great Malawian team and the Canadian partner ‘ Stand as One Ministry ’. Berthine has now joined this team as a project-coordinator, from the Netherlands.

Berthine: “Our lives have changed tremendously. I’m traveling to Malawi a few times per year to help coordinate the farmer outreach program and organize an international agroforestry course in collaboration with the Agroforestry Promotion Network . We now work with farmers in 8 villages around the farm who combine several lessons that can also be found in my book. Last April I visited John Bonongwe. He was the first farmer who adopted this new way of farming. He now had more than enough food to eat, and enough to share. He even gave me two home-grown pumpkins to show his gratitude. He said; ‘it is as if I’m dreaming. Previously I needed all my land to grow maize and only harvested 7 bags. Now I grow maize on half of my land and harvest 20 bags.’ On top of that he grows sweet potatoe, cassava, peas and beans. Fruits from his newly planted fruit trees are a promise for the future. I feel like I'm dreaming as well! ”

Together with a team of volunteers and her colleagues from Malawi, Berthine is now developing educational material to help spread this method faster.

Berthine's book suitable for training farmers

Berthine's 'I Will Heal Their Land' is a valued addition to teaching materials and has proven very useful in training sessions for farmers. Foundations For Farming (FFF) Zimbabwe, printed 1.000 copies for this purpose at a local printing house in Harare. And the books are well received by the FFF participants.

In the photo above are some of the Government Agricultural Extension Officers who have been trained and have been issued Berthine’s books. We are glad that the book is a blessing to them!

The first print from Dutch soil!

Special moment today. The first print rolled off the press at Ipskamp Printing Enschede. These 50 books go to farmers in Ghana! I was positively surprised with the result. The cover is beautifully printed and the paper is nice and thick. Real value for money. Happy with it!

Book presentation!

We returned savely from two unforgettable weeks in Zimbabwe. The absolute highlight: the launch of my book! What a special event that was!

In 'I Will Heal Their Land' I share the stories and discoveries of five Christian farmers, who see a centuries-old promise of God fulfilled on their land. I had the opportunity to share these stories at a Foundations for Farming conference, attended by Christian farmers from more than 10 different countries. Founder Brian Oldreive, is the first story in my book. His harvest failed for three years in a row, after which he turned to God in despair. The principles he discovered after that prayer lay the foundation for Foundations for Farming. After applying God's principles, he becomes one of the most successful farmers in Africa, then teaches them to small-scale farmers in his country. The results are astonishing. Every farmer who applies the method has more than enough harvest and can feed his family. The other four stories in my book confirm what Brian discovered and are a wonderful addition to it. The results are extremely hopeful. Their discoveries are driving farmers worldwide from hunger to abundance and ecosystems and communities are being restored.

I couldn't have wished for a better launch than here in Zimbabwe. The book was received very enthusiastically by both local and international farmers. My dream, hope and prayer is that the book will enable farmers around the world, with God's help, to make their land healthy and productive again.
